“These paintings were done at the very beginning of Spafford’s career and were an investigation of something that moved beyond abstract technique and addressed elemental, iconic themes. These explorations ultimately found a focus in Greek mythology but, for a time, allowed him to express a sort of personal mythology. Spafford’s hope was that each viewer would see his own narrative, feel his own struggle, within these frames.”
